Thinking About Daycare

Monday, January 24, 2011

When we decided that I would be a stay-at-home mom (SAHM), I never thought that I would ever consider taking Baby to daycare. Even a few months ago when friends started talking about it, I never thought it would be for us.

But now, after 15 months of raising baby and neglecting the house, finances, and home business, suddenly my attitude about childcare has changed. I find myself asking friends about Kindercare and noticing home daycare signs. I think about other options, like asking Hubby to watch Baby while I get things done, waiting to do things until Grandma can come over, taking Baby to a friend's house, having someone come over to watch her, or just continuing to not get things done. I mean, many SAHMs do okay without daycare, what's my problem?

Well, one of the problems is no naps while at home. She only naps in the car. Well, to be fair, if she does nap at home, it's really short, and we have to lie down with her for about an hour or more just to get her a 20-30 minute nap. Sigh...

I guess it just boils down to the fact that I would really like to have one full day each week so I can do grocery shopping, run errands, work on finances, work out, or just have some "Me" time. I feel sort of guilty about that but I sometimes, actually usually, get frustrated when I'm home with her and can't get things done that need to be done. At leat at the daycare, she would have other kids to play with and keep her company.

Then the fear of leaving my toddler with strangers hits me, and I second guess childcare. Also the added cost each month is another worry. What a difficult decision. I'm trapped between desperation and fear.

The home daycare I'm looking at right now has an open house which I'll check out. From the outside looking in, it looks cute and well thought out. She also teaches Montessori and has pretty reasonable rates. We'll see...
