Rose Quilt

Rose Quilt

Quilt Kit

I made this quilt starting with a Quick Quilts Cottage Crib Size quilt kit that I bought from Jo-Ann's Fabric and Crafts. It had the rose theme I was going for and most of the colors I wanted. I made several fabric substitutions and modifications to the original kit design.

Fabric Substitutions/Changes

Soft and comfy rose fabricI substituted one of the fat quarters that came in the kit with a different fabric. I found this beautiful velvety soft and plush fabric in the baby section of Jo-Ann's. It was embossed with roses. I think it was called Soft and Comfy Rose fabric.

I also substituted the inner border fabric that came in the kit with a pink satin to give the quilt an elegant touch.

Embroidery

embroideryMy husband machine-embroidered on the boring beige fabric a simple set of 2-color rose designs that we got from Embroidery Library.

He also embroidered the baby's name on the bottom corner of the quilt, as we've done with all the quilts we've been making. Is it a wonder why we picked a rose theme for her quilt?

Quilting

puffy rosesI quilted around the roses prints on the fabric to give them a puffy look and stand out more. It was a subtle effect that you can only tell by looking at it live, but it gave interest to the otherwise flat rose print.

I also quilted over the lines on one fabric to give it a 3-dimensional look as well. This one is a lot more obvious and a big difference from the flat print.

I used muslin as a backing fabric for the above decorative quilting so that it wouldn't show on the final backing fabric. Once I basted on the final backing fabric, I stitched-in-the-ditch of the patchwork in order to give the squares and borders a puffy look. The batting was light-weight, so it wasn't puffy as it would have been with a medium to heavier weight batting.

Binding

ruffle bindingInstead of doing the binding as the quilt instructed, I decided to use a ruffle sandwiched in between the patchwork and the backing fabric. This was a beautiful pink, sheer georgette ruffle with a satin binding. It gave the quilt a very delicate and feminine look.
